Do Happy Couples Really Need Premarital Counseling?

Do Happy Couples Really Need Premarital Counseling? Here's What I Want You to Know.
By Nancy Chopin, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) & Relationship Coach
You're in love. You're happy. You genuinely enjoy each other.
You laugh together, support each other, have fun together, and can't wait to spend the rest of your lives together.
Maybe you've even said, "We have such a great relationship. What would we possibly need premarital counseling for?"
And you know what? I love that for you.
Seriously.
As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and Relationship Coach with more than 17 years of experience in the mental health field, I love seeing couples who genuinely enjoy their relationships.
But here's something I want you to consider:
What if premarital counseling isn't about fixing what's wrong with your relationship, but intentionally strengthening everything that's already right?
Because being happy together and being prepared for marriage are two different things.
And you deserve both.
1. Being Happy Doesn't Mean You've Had Every Important Conversation
Let's be clear: You don't have to manufacture problems just because you're preparing for marriage.
But there are conversations that even happy, loving couples haven't necessarily had.
What happens if one of you loses a job? How will you handle financial disagreements? What boundaries will you establish with extended family? What happens when your expectations around intimacy change? How will you divide responsibilities when life becomes overwhelming?
These aren't questions designed to make you doubt your relationship.
They're questions designed to help you understand the life you're agreeing to build together.
In my 12-session online premarital counseling program, The Marriage Roadmap, I help couples have these conversations in a supportive, structured environment.
We explore communication, finances, family influences, intimacy, boundaries, and shared expectations so you're not relying on assumptions about what your future will look like.
Because loving someone doesn't automatically mean you know how they think about everything that matters.
2. You Haven't Experienced Every Version of Life Together Yet
Right now, life might feel pretty wonderful.
But marriage isn't just about how you love each other during the exciting seasons.
It's also about how you support each other when you're exhausted, grieving, financially stressed, navigating family challenges, or trying to figure out what comes next.
And listen, I'm not saying something terrible is waiting around the corner.
I'm saying life is going to keep happening after the wedding.
Your careers may change. Your priorities may shift. Your family responsibilities may grow. One of you may need more support than the other at different points.
You can't prepare for every circumstance, but you can strengthen the skills that help you navigate uncertainty together.
Through The Marriage Roadmap, I help couples explore how they respond to stress, communicate during difficult seasons, and support each other when their needs or circumstances change.
We practice skills that help you approach challenges as partners rather than adversaries.
You don't need to predict every storm to learn how to navigate one together.
What If You Could Prepare for Those Moments Before They Happen?
That's exactly why I created The Marriage Roadmap, my 12-session online premarital counseling program.
I don't want couples to wait until they're overwhelmed, disconnected, or struggling to figure out how to navigate life together.
I want to help you build those skills while you're already happy, connected, and excited about your future.
Through personalized guidance, relationship assessments, and practical exercises, I help couples strengthen their communication, understand each other's expectations, and prepare for the realities of marriage.
Because you don't have to wait for a problem to start building a stronger foundation.

3. Great Chemistry Doesn't Automatically Equal Great Communication
You can talk for hours.
You can finish each other's sentences.
You can know exactly how your partner takes their coffee, what makes them laugh, and what kind of day they've had just by looking at their face.
And still struggle to communicate when you're hurt.
Because knowing someone well isn't the same as knowing how to navigate difficult emotions together.
What happens when one of you feels criticized? When one partner needs space and the other needs reassurance? When someone says, "I'm fine," but clearly isn't?
These moments don't necessarily mean something is wrong with your relationship.
They mean you're human.
As an LMFT, I bring a systemic, attachment-informed perspective to my work with couples. I help you recognize your communication patterns, understand emotional responses, and practice expressing needs without criticism, defensiveness, or emotional withdrawal.
I don't just want you to know that communication matters. I want you to leave knowing how to communicate more effectively in your own relationship.
That's a major part of what we work on in The Marriage Roadmap.
4. The Things You Don't Discuss Can Become the Things You Argue About
Here's where I want you to pay attention.
Sometimes couples don't have disagreements because they're genuinely aligned.
Other times, they haven't disagreed because certain topics haven't come up yet.
There's a difference.
Maybe you've never talked about how much financial support you'll provide to your parents.
Maybe you've never discussed what happens if one person wants children and the other changes their mind.
Maybe you've assumed you'll split household responsibilities equally, but your partner has a completely different expectation.
Or maybe you have different definitions of privacy, fidelity, and appropriate boundaries with other people.
Unspoken expectations don't disappear because you're in love.
They often become more noticeable when life requires you to make decisions together.
In The Marriage Roadmap, I use guided discussions and the PREPARE/ENRICH relationship assessment to help couples explore strengths, expectations, and areas that deserve more attention.
We aren't searching for reasons your relationship won't work.
We're creating opportunities for you to understand each other more deeply and develop shared expectations before misunderstandings become recurring frustrations.
5. Your Childhood Is Coming Into Your Marriage, Too
Here's something couples don't always realize:
You're not just bringing your love into marriage. You're bringing everything you've learned about relationships.
The way you saw your caregivers communicate, handle conflict, express affection, manage money, and navigate family responsibilities may influence your expectations today.
Maybe you grew up in a home where conflict meant yelling.
Maybe your partner grew up in a home where nobody talked about difficult feelings.
Maybe one of you learned that love means always putting others first, while the other learned that independence is essential.
Neither of you chose every lesson you learned growing up.
But you do have the opportunity to decide which lessons you want to carry forward.
This is one of the reasons I value premarital counseling so much.
Through my work as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, I help couples explore family patterns, attachment experiences, and the beliefs that influence how they show up in relationships.
We identify what you want to preserve, what you want to change, and how to build a marriage that reflects your shared values rather than simply repeating familiar patterns.
Your marriage deserves to be something you create intentionally, not just something you inherited expectations about.
6. You Deserve More Than Just Hoping Everything Works Out
Nobody gets engaged thinking, "I hope we become disconnected and resentful someday."
Of course not.
You get engaged because you love each other and believe in your future together.
But here's my question:
If your marriage is one of the most important commitments you'll ever make, why wouldn't you prepare for it?
We prepare for careers. We research major purchases. We create financial plans. We spend months, sometimes years, planning weddings.
Yet somehow, preparing for the actual marriage can become an afterthought.
And I don't want that for you.
Not because I think your relationship is in danger.
But because I believe the relationship you're so excited about deserves your time, attention, and intention.
That's exactly why I created The Marriage Roadmap.
I wanted couples to have a place where they could slow down, ask meaningful questions, develop practical skills, and prepare for marriage with professional guidance rather than relying solely on good intentions.
Your relationship doesn't have to be struggling to be worth investing in.
What If You Could Enter Marriage Feeling Even More Connected and Prepared?
Imagine approaching your wedding day knowing you've taken time to understand each other's expectations.
You've had conversations about money, family, intimacy, and your future.
You've learned how to navigate disagreements and reconnect afterward.
You've explored the patterns you each bring into your relationship.
And you've developed practical tools you can continue using long after the wedding.
Does that mean you'll never disagree or face challenges?
Of course not.
But it means you've invested in understanding each other and developing skills to support the relationship you're building.
That's what I want for the couples I work with.
Not a perfect marriage.
A thoughtful, connected, intentional one.
Introducing The Marriage Roadmap: Online Premarital Counseling for Couples Who Want to Build Something Meaningful
The Marriage Roadmap is my 12-session online premarital counseling program, designed to help couples move beyond wedding planning and intentionally prepare for married life.
As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and Relationship Coach, I combine more than 17 years of professional experience with structured relationship assessment, practical education, and guided conversations.
And here's what makes this process different from simply reading relationship advice online:
We're not talking about relationships in general. We're talking about YOUR relationship.
Your communication patterns.
Your expectations.
Your histories.
Your strengths.
Your future.
Here's What Our Work Together Includes
A comprehensive relationship assessment
We begin with four assessment-focused sessions, including joint and individual conversations and the PREPARE/ENRICH assessment, to better understand your relationship strengths and areas for growth.
Eight sessions of practical relationship preparation
Together, we explore communication, conflict and repair, finances, family influences, intimacy, boundaries, parenting expectations, household responsibilities, and your shared vision.
Personalized guidance and real-life exercises
I help you move beyond knowing what healthy relationships require to practicing skills you can actually use in everyday life.
Your personalized Marriage Roadmap
You'll bring together what you've learned into a practical resource reflecting your relationship priorities, shared goals, and the skills you want to continue developing.
The program is conducted virtually, with relationship coaching available to adults 18 and older throughout the United States.
Here's What I Hope You Remember
You don't have to wait until you're unhappy to learn how to communicate better.
You don't have to wait until money becomes an argument to discuss financial expectations.
You don't have to wait until family boundaries become uncomfortable to establish them.
And you certainly don't have to wait until your marriage is struggling to invest in its future.
The best time to have important conversations isn't necessarily when something goes wrong. It's when you're both willing to show up, listen, learn, and build together.
So if you're engaged, happy, and wondering whether premarital counseling is really necessary, here's what I'd tell you:
You may not need counseling because something is wrong.
But you can absolutely benefit from guidance that helps you strengthen what's right.
And that's a pretty beautiful reason to begin.
Your Wedding Is One Day. Your Marriage Is the Life You're Building Together.
You've already decided this person is worth choosing.
Now give yourselves the opportunity to learn how to keep choosing each other with intention.
I'd love to help you build that foundation through The Marriage Roadmap.
